Online Reading FlashMob “Let’s Read Saroyan”


    On August 31, 2016 the Yerevan American Corner held an Online Reading flash mob under the headline “Let’s Read Saroyan” commemorating William Saroyan’s 108th birthday. The event was organized by the Intellectual Renaissance Foundation, in association with U.S. Embassy and Yerevan City Central Library after Avetik Isahakian, in the frameworks of Saroyan House Project. Yerevan read out loud 2 shorts stories by Saroyan: My Heart Is In Highlands and The Oranges. During the event there was a live connection with American Corners in Kapan, Vanadzor, Gyumri and Charentsavan who also read some of Saroyan’s finest works.
The Reading FlashMob was opened by the director of the Intellectual Renaissance Foundation Hakob Hakobyan, who spoke about the mission of the foundation and thanked the participant for their willingness to be a part of the project. Saroyan’s short stories were read by actress, reciter, TV host Hrachuhie Utmasian, TV host Avet Barseghian, the Head of International Relations Department of Armenian Writers’ Union Hermineh Navasardian, writer, translator Gohar Galstian, writer Harut Vardanian, member of the Board of Trustees of Intellectual Renaissance Foundation Nora Yakobian and Armenian entrepreneur Armen Verdian.
This reading flash mob was a good reminder of William Saroyan’s phenomenon. With his simple language, which covers deep meaning, he has touched the hearts of more than one generation and will continue to do so, to spread love and peace through his timeless creations.
After the event, the guests were offered to visit Tumanyan Park, to continue the celebration of great writer’s birthday.
